An Australian professional surfer Michael Eugene “Mick” Fanning miraculously survived a shark attack which was broadcast on live television during a surfing competition in Africa.

Pro surfer Mick Fanning was waiting for a set of waves on his surfboard at Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa when a shark fin appeared next to him. Live television viewers watched as at least one shark can be seen briefly submerging and appearing on the other side of his board. Fanning punched the shark before escaping.

The surfer got away unharmed as rescuers rapidly ran onto the scene. Authorities immediately put the competition on hold after the attack.

In an interview after the incident, Fanning said he managed to punch the shark in the head before he started kicking and shouting for help.

Fanning is a triple word champion. He won the 2007, 2009 and 2013 ASP World Tour.
